Roof Bag Installation Tips That Will Keep Your Cargo Safe and Secure

Roof Bag

Are you a road trip lover and want to maximize your car storage space by installing a roof cargo bag? Below are valuable roof bag installation tips to effectively secure your cargo for safe and stress-free travel.

Before you embark on a roof bag installation, some of the preparation activities you must undertake include:

Preparation 1: Choose The Right Roof Cargo Bag

The first step in roof bag installation is to select the right roof bag for SUVs or vans. So, the size of your roof bag must suit your vehicle.

Fortunately, there are soft roof carrier bags that you can install on any of your car roofs with or without a roof rack, and they come complete with their special carrying and storage bags.

You need to be aware of the maximum weight your car can hold. Information on your car’s static and dynamic load capacity is also important. These will help you estimate the total cargo weight you need to carry. Do not forget to factor in the weight of your roof racks in your roof load estimates.

If your vehicle does not have a roof rack, you will need a roof bag that can be installed on your car door frame. In this case, you must also have an anti-slip mat to keep it stable on the roof.

The roof cargo bag you purchase must have a weather-resistant coating to keep your items safe from water, snow, or dust during your journey.

All the straps and zippers must be in perfect condition.

Preparation 2: Get Your Vehicle Ready!

Now that you have chosen the right roof bag for your vehicle, you must ensure that your car roof is in perfect condition for its installation by:

Checking Your Roof Rack or Roof Bars

Check your roof rack or roof bars to ensure they are well-installed and capable of supporting your roof bag with its cargo.

If your vehicle has no roof rack, you may need to purchase and install a suitable one. To ensure proper rack installation, you must follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

Clean Your Car Roof

Thoroughly clean and dry your car’s roof because dirt or sand particles may cause scratches on your paintwork.

Roof Bag Installation Phases

Now that your vehicle is ready and you have your roof bag, you can do the installation yourself, but why not let someone assist you?

What next?

Spread Anti-slip Pad On Your Car Roof

Unfold and spread an anti-slip pad or rubberized mat at the center of your vehicle’s roof. This is necessary to prevent your roof bag from shifting during the journey.

The rubberized mat also protects your car’s roof paint from scratches caused by friction. Make sure the mat is the right size for your bag.

It’s not recommended to use blankets or towels as anti-slip mats, as they are less effective than purpose-made mats.

If possible, you may need to adjust your roof bars or roof rails to create adequate installation space between them.

Roof Bag Installation

Unfold your roof bag and position it on top of the anti-slip mat. It should be well-balanced at the center.

If your vehicle does not have a roof rack, you will need a special roof bag with tie-down hook straps to secure your roof bag to your car’s door frames.

Identify suitable door frame positions aligned with the roof bag’s base fastening positions by opening all car doors.

Slightly pull down the door-frame rubber strip and hook your tie-down strap on it before pushing the rubber seal back into position. Repeat the same in all door frames.

Close all the doors with attached straps remaining outside. Now, tightly fasten the straps attached to your roof bag with the hooked door-frame straps.

You may adjust your door-frame straps where necessary.

If your car, SUV, or van has a roof rack, firmly fasten the bag to the rack using its inbuilt straps.

You must follow the installation instructions provided by your roof bag manufacturer.

How to Pack a Rooftop Cargo Bag

As you begin loading items in your auto roof bag, take all the necessary precautions so that your items do not scratch your vehicle.

Open your roof bag zipper flap and zippers, and carefully load your items while ensuring an even distribution of their weights. Always begin with the heavier luggage at the bottom.

For a better loading experience, have your main items well-packed in suitable bags or suitcases.

Zipping and Securing Roof Bag

Make sure all zippers are fully closed on your car roof bag before driving. Fold the zipper flaps to keep your zipper protected from rain.

Use the roof bag’s compression straps to secure your bag on roof rails or roof bars.

Please make sure that all the straps of the roof bag are securely fastened.

Before embarking on your journey, ensure that your car’s tire pressure is optimal. Additionally, make periodic stops at safe locations to check your cargo bag and secure any loose straps to keep your cargo stable.

Conclusion

When it comes to roof bag installation, the safety of your cargo and the stability of your car are critical. Choose the rooftop cargo bag that suits your vehicle and do not overload. Double-check to confirm that your cargo bag is tightly secured.
Only buy your soft car roof bag from a reputable roof bag manufacturer who can help you make the perfect choice.
